About the Author

Grace Ellis is a New York Times-bestselling, GLAAD Media Award–winning script writer. Her graphic novels include the much-lauded "Lumberjanes," which has sold 2 million copies worldwide; the long-running "Moonstruck"; and several pieces for DC Comics. Her latest book, "Flung Out of Space: Inspired by the Indecent Adventures of Patricia Highsmith," was a New York Times Notable Book of 2022 and won the 2023 Eisner Award for Best Reality-Based Work. In 2022, Grace was awarded the Ohio Individual Excellence Award in playwriting for "Holding It Together," a site-specific play for high schools.

A born and bred Midwesterner, Grace lives in Columbus, Ohio where she can often be found eating ice cream or petting an animal.

This Friday, November 17th, visit The Art Gallery at Birdie Books for the opening reception for local artist Maggie Kletrovetz! Maggie is a multi-media artist from Sunbury, Ohio. She finds inspiration from nature, spirituality, and fantasy. She plans to pursue a degree in Fine Arts at Ohio University and is a recent addition to the Birdie Team!

Join us on November 2nd at 6:30PM for Author Talk x2! with local authors Negesti Kaudo & Adam Gellings! Negesti Kaudo is a Midwestern essayist who holds an MFA in creative nonfiction from Columbia College Chicago and has worked as a copywriter, a sex toy columnist, and an adjunct writing instructor. Her work has appeared in Fourth Genre, Best American Experimental Writing, and elsewhere. Ripe is her first book. Adam J. Gellings is the author of the poetry collection Little Palace. He received his PhD from the State University of New York at Binghamton, where he was the recipient of a fellowship from the Marion Clayton Link Endowment. His work has appeared in numerous journals & anthologies including Best New Poets 2017 & 2021, Copper Nickel, Salamander, The Southampton Review, Willow Springs & elsewhere. A graduate of the University of Toledo, he resides in Columbus, Ohio where he teaches Writing & Composition courses at Columbus College of Art & Design.

Join us for SPOOKY STORYTIME at 10:30 AM! Don’t let the name of the event fool you, this will be a fun, silly, and not-too-spooky storytime where the Birdie Books flock will read some fun Halloween children’s books suitable for children of all ages. We will have candy upon entrance of the bookshop so dress up the little ones in their costumes so we can be their first trick-or-treat stop of the day! Oh yeah… and we may just give away an award for the best costume at storytime (WINK)!

Marie Weller and Paula Vertikoff are an Elementary School Counselor and Principal duo dedicated to social-emotional wellness for children and the adults who care about them. With a combined fifty years of experience in education, they have seen over and over again what research has confirmed - social-emotional wellness plays an integral role in academic and life success. They have created Cranium Kids Media to share video lessons, stories, and activities to help young people understand their minds, recognize and manage emotions, and develop social awareness skills for learning and living. Their little life lessons provide the big life skills needed to lead happier, healthier lives.

Sarah Hale is a multi-media artist based in Westerville, Ohio. She finds inspiration from nature, folklore, and vintage fairytale illustrations. She's a CCAD alumni and a former tattoo artist who has recently joined the staff at Birdie Books.

As we round out the dog days of summer and in celebration of National Dog Day, we will be hosting local animal rescue Stop the Suffering (STS) from 11am-3pm for a Pups & Pints event! Come out and support this amazing volunteer-run organization that rescues dogs from Ohio and surrounding states. There will be adorable adoptable pups to meet and connect with and cold beverages, what’s not to love?!!

From 4pm-6pm we are inviting you to come enjoy a pint on the patio with your pups! Donations to STS will continue through the evening.
