July is Disability Pride Month!

July is Disability Pride Month! This is a month to showcase the stories, successes, and lives of those living with a disability, whether invisible or visible!

Some of my favorite books featuring disabilities include these:

Out of My Mind
by Sharon M Draper

I remember reading this as a kid and just being blown away by it. Our main character, Melody, has cerebral palsy. We follow her story as she goes through the highs and lows of being in middle school, defying the expectations put on her, and truly shining as she learns to embrace her strengths. This is definitely a great read for fans of Wonder, and it’s part of a series! Bonus points for the author being from Ohio!

The Collected Schizophrenias
by Esmé Weijun Wong

This collection of essays is one of the most eye-opening things I’ve read. When people say they’d like to understand mental illness or try to comprehend what it could be like, this is the book I recommend. Wong writes about schizophrenia and the confusion that occurs when people try to make sense of a diagnosis that can mean different things for different people. It’s both beautifully poetic and direct. I just can’t recommend it enough.

If you’d like to take a look at some other recommendations for Disability Pride Month, here’s a list of titles for all ages!
