It’s Summerween Season!
If you grew up watching Gravity Falls like me (and being totally obsessed with it) you’d understand that June is Summerween season! Now for those that aren’t sure what that is, it’s a celebration of all things spooky, but in the summer! Instead of carving pumpkins, we substitute them with oversized watermelons, dress up in our costumes, and watch scary movies outdoors. While Summerween is a fictional holiday, the celebration is truly real.
While I’m a sucker for nostalgia, I’m also a huge “all-things-spooky” enthusiast! After bookselling for a few years, I also found some great horror books published around this time! So, here are my top spooky-reads for those ready for Summerween!
“Diavola” by Jennifer Thorne follows Anna, the family outcast, and their vacation to a villa in Italy. But, when they arrive, Anna begins to realize the malicious entity that lurks behind the walls and the locked door just down the hall and it’s coming for them all. This book is truly a perfect spooky summer read!
My second recommendation is “How to Survive Camping: The Man With No Shadow” by Bonnie Quinn. In this novel, you enter Goat Valley Campground famous for its dangerous hauntings. But before you enter, you must know the rules. Don’t buy ice from the children with no wagon, and especially DO NOT follow the lights. And if you don’t follow the rules, it could be fatal.
My final recommendation for Summerween celebrations is “Make Me Better” by Sarah Gailey. If you enjoyed Netflix’s award-winning show “Wayward” you’ll enjoy this book. Celica is tired of being alone, she is deep in grief and nothing has helped. When one of her friends suggests a Salt Festival held by the secluded community. But when Celia arrives, she realizes that the community may be more dangerous than she realizes. But she needs anything to make her better.
While this is only a few of my recommendations, we also have a full curated list of great Summerween reads!
