Spring into Reading!

Spring is in the air, and I can feel its joy and renewal seeping back into my days. As a kid, spring meant the return of fun outdoor activities, including my favorite family ritual: picnics with books. We would lie on the newly warmed earth and read together for hours!

This time with my family feels like the warmth of the sun; every spring, I am reminded of those long, leisurely evenings reading together and enjoying the outdoors.

To help you start your own springtime reading traditions with your families, I’ve collected a list of kids books that celebrate all things spring and outdoorsy. This collection ranges from silly and fun stories to informative books about the outdoors.

But wait, parents, I didn't leave you out!

A great way to encourage your kids to read is by modeling reading for fun, too. One of my core memories as a kid was witnessing my dad read a 1,000+ page book. This totally blew my mind! At the time, I was just learning to read, and I maxed out at maybeee 10 pages. This definitely had an impact on my young mind, and his dedication gave me the confidence to pursue reading more intensely. Now I’m not saying you have to read a book that is that long, but just reading around your kids in general can show them that reading is fun too!

As we are preparing for spring,  I recommend exploring field guides and nature nonfiction writing. Nature writing lets you see your landscape through new eyes and have an awareness and appreciation for plants and creatures you might not have normally thought twice about.

Also, if you are doing any camping or similar outdoor activities, field guides are a great way to feel grounded in your environment.

I hope these selections can help you get inspired to read more this spring.

 Happy reading!
