As March continues, we take time to recognize March as Women’s History Month. For hundreds of years, women all over the globe suffered severe oppression under the thumb of the patriarchy embedded in societal norms and institutions. In 1920, under the 9th Amendment, women won their long-fought right to vote. Now here we are, just over 100 years later, and women have proved time and time again that we will never go back.

Now, as we face the continuing fight for women’s rights, it is more important than ever to find solace and empowerment within sisterhood. Continuing to educate minds, both young and old, with stories of powerful women. Released this month (3/10), the highly anticipated Judy Blume: A Life by Mark Oppenheimer dives deep into Blume's childhood in the 1950’s and the life of the woman behind some of the most influential novels.

Women, not only powerful in this real world, are powerhouses within the world of fiction. This April is bringing us the anticipated Maria Semple’s Go Gentle. This novel takes us alongside Adora Hazzard and her teenage daughter, and Adora navigates life after divorce. Finding sisterhood within a “coven” of like-minded women, you’ll travel with Adora through her mid-life, self-navigation story.

While I’ve only mentioned these two titles, I’ve gathered an extensive list for you for Women’s History Month reading. Books to educate, to escape, to empower, to read to your child, and books to let you feel that “female rage.”

Women’s History Month allows us a time for reflection on all of the women who came before us, and to not let us forget the sacrifices they made. To quote Virginia Woolf, “For most of history, Anonymous was a woman.” We must also remember to support our sisters and community, and fight for the rights of all women. And don’t forget to let yourself feel the “female rage,” because that is what has been pushing us forward for over 100 years. We will never go back, especially without a fight.

Sincerely,

Maggie
